Summer in St. Louis wouldn't quite be the same without Ted Drewes Frozen Custard. Who can remember making a pit stop there on family road trips? It's simply delicious and has become a staple in the city for close to a century.

Ted Drewes has been serving frozen custard for over 80 years.

It all started with Ted Drewes Sr. Drewes was a renowned professional tennis player from St. Louis who often traveled to Florida for tournaments. While in Florida, he opened his first ice cream shop in 1929. Following that store, he opened up another store in 1930 on the Natural Bridge Road in St. Louis and then a South Grand store in 1931. 10 years later, up one last shop which is the current Chippewa location.

Today, Ted Drewes has two locations in St. Louis.

The shop on Chippewa Street is located right off Route 66, so it tends to be the more popular destination. However, the shop on Grand is just as good and the custard is just as tasty.

Their most notably known for the "concrete."

The concrete, which was created in 1959, is a malt or shake so thick that it can be served upside down.

But they also make a mean sundae.

All the fixings are available to make it a truly exceptional ice cream sundae. And of course, they top it with a very generous serving of hot fudge.

The Cookie Sandwich is the result of a delicious partnership between Ted Drewes and another local sweet shop.

Instead of using store bought cookies, Ted Drewes partnered with Dad's Cookie Company in St. Louis to create the most incredible scotch oatmeal cookie and ice cream sandwich.

During the winter, the ice cream shop also sells Christmas trees.

Each October, the Ted Drewes crew travels to a Nova Scotia tree farm to cut down the most beautiful firs and pine trees. They then transport them to St. Louis so Missourians can have access to these rare-to-the-area Christmas trees.

The custard has become so iconic, they even started serving it in vending machines throughout the city.

This Ted Drewes frozen custard machine can be found in the St. Louis airport. You never know when a craving will kick in, so these are pretty darn handy in times of need.

Every summer, the place is packed.
