A Mississippi Dining Experience so Exceptional, It’s Nationally Recognized
Treat yourself to some of the very best fried chicken in the South when you visit Walnut Hills Restaurant.
You don't have to look far to find incredible restaurants in Mississippi. Many of them are hidden gems, cozy neighborhood spots, or hole-in-the-walls where everybody knows your name. Others, however, are so outstanding that they've garnered national attention. That's certainly the case with Walnut Hills in Mississippi, which has been recognized as the restaurant with the very best fried chicken in the state.
Walnut Hills in Mississippi is no hidden gem; it's received countless awards and accolades. It's even been featured in publications such as Good Morning America, Southern Living, 1,000 Places To See Before You Die, and Mississippi Magazine. This Vicksburg landmark was once a private home built by the Rogers Family in 1880. It's instantly recognizable with its wide porch and pierced columns.
In 1980, this iconic Adam Street home was transformed to a simple round-table restaurant and evoked the old-fashioned boarding house restaurant. While the restaurant has undergone some renovations over the years, not much else has changed. As stated on the website, "the familiar mismatched rockers are still on the porch, along with whiskey bottles of the wonderful homemade hot pepper sauce on each table."
And while the atmosphere is homey and comfortable, you're really here for the food. Specifically, the chicken. Some call this cayenne-laced fried chicken some of the very best in the world. We'd recommend planning a trip to Vicksburg to test this theory for yourself!
No detail is overlooked here at Walnut Hills. The popularity of the restaurant is owed to its chefs, cooks, owners, and staff who make the space so welcoming to all. Joyce Clingan is the current owner and she has been operating the restaurant for nearly three decades. The kitchen's most beloved cook, Herdcine Williams, sadly passed away last year, but her legacy lives on through this extraordinary place.
In addition to the award-winning fried chicken, you'll find other Southern staples on the menu such as homemade biscuits, pies, casseroles, potato rounds, and more. Reviewers rave about the quality of these traditional dishes as well as the exceptional service. As one reviewer wrote, "if I could give it more than five stars, I would!"
Walnut Hills Restaurant is open every day except Tuesday, from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. (closes at 2:00 p.m. on Sundays).
