Like lots of worthwhile holes-in-the-wall, Taylor Grocery is hidden away in a small town. As the name suggests, it’s in Taylor, which is about 10 miles outside of Oxford.

An unassuming storefront with lots of character is another tell-tale trait of a hole-in-the-wall – and Taylor Grocery has got that, too.

Not only is it housed in a dry goods store from the 1800s, but its interior walls are plastered with everything from school photos to messages written in permanent marker.

The final – and mandatory – quality of a hole-in-the-wall is great food, and Taylor Grocery has definitely got that!

Over the years, it’s gone from a local favorite to a bona fide institution known for serving the “South’s best catfish.”

Lightly breaded with a blend of corn and wheat flour, the “famous” catfish filets have the perfect outer crunch with a tender filet on the inside.

Taylor Grocery serves whole catfish, too. And it’s just as crispy and delicious as the filets.

Both types of catfish – filet and whole – come with two sides and hushpuppies, making for the perfect home-cooked Southern meal.

It’s not just the fare that’ll remind you of home, though. As soon as you sit down in the casual, frills-free dining room, you’re sure to feel right at home (i.e. nice and comfy).

A word of warning: Taylor Grocery gets pretty packed, so don’t be surprised if you have to wait. Just keep in mind that the no-frills fish is definitely worth the fuss!
