The Hole-In-The-Wall Eatery Serves Some Of The Best Smoked Sausage In Mississippi

Red rose sausage is one of the most iconic foods in Mississippi, and there’s one hole-in-the-wall restaurant that’s famous for it. Big Apple Inn is one of the most historic restaurants in Jackson, and this unassuming eatery is one of the best places in Mississippi to grab this iconic sandwich.

The Big Apple Inn hasn’t changed much since it opened over 80 years ago.

The family-owned and operated eatery is currently owned by Geno Lee, the great-grandson of Juan Mora, who originally opened up Big Apple Inn in 1939.

The restaurant is the definition of not judging a book by its cover.

The interior is worn at best, but Big Apple Inn lets the food speak for itself over here, and that’s why it’s been a go-to spot for locals for almost a century. In fact, when the restaurant was remodeled back in 1990, the customers didn't like it! The community wanted to keep the nostalgic decor, so the owners put it back and here it's stayed.

Pig ear sandwiches, bologna, smoked sausage sandwiches, and tamales are the stars of the show here.

And the recipes haven’t changed.

Much like the interior, the recipes appear to be frozen in time.

Hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Both the pig ear sandwiches and smoked sausages are served slider-style.

At some of the most affordable prices ever, I might add.

At about $2 each, you can grab a bunch of them without breaking the bank.

And these things are so delicious, you'll definitely want more than one.

Be sure to get a few tamales for the road.

These legendary tamales are the cornerstone of the restaurant. Before the Big Apple Inn opened in 1939, Juan Mora hand-rolled these tamales over an open grill outside of the nearby Alamo Theater. The recipe hasn’t changed in all these years, and they’ve even earned a spot on the Mississippi Delta Hot Tamale Trail.
