This Is Why The Quarry Is the Best Waterfront Dining in Michigan for Peak Summer Vibes
The Quarry in Monroe, Michigan, offers fantastic food and spectacular waterfront views. It’s the perfect spot for a memorable summer dining experience.

It was a Tuesday, and Michigan had finally decided to act like summer. After weeks of gray skies and cold mornings, the sun showed up and stuck around. That kind of weather triggers something primal in me: a deep, unshakable craving for fried fish eaten near water. Michigan is full of waterfront spots, and one of my go-tos is Sindbad’s. However, that's where I go for mussels so fresh they practically swim to your table. But this time, I was in the mood for something new. I opened Google Maps and let the blue dots guide me. That’s when I spotted The Quarry.
Tucked just far enough from town to feel like a hidden gem but close enough for an easy day trip, this spot gave off that intriguing vibe: could be casual bites by the water, could be unexpectedly great cuisine with a view. Turns out, it’s very much the latter. I rolled in around 2 p.m., assuming it would be me, a couple of retirees, and someone on their third iced tea. But no, this place was lively. Locals clearly already know what the rest of us are just discovering: The Quarry is the place for peak summer dining.
The vibes? Think modern American with a splash of tasteful nautical. No fishnets on the walls, thank you very much. It’s stylish without being stiff, and the views? They’re not just good: They’re “tell your group chat about it and maybe make it your phone background” good. The restaurant sits on a 333-acre, spring-fed quarry with water so clear and blue it looks like it was Photoshopped. At 100 feet deep, it makes sunsets here feel extra cinematic. Add a cocktail and, boom: You’re the main character.
Speaking of cocktails, we had two. One was a well-made classic (no frills, no surprises), the other was what I can only describe as the drink equivalent of a beach vacation: bright, unapologetically summery, and probably wearing sunglasses. But before we get to my meal, you need to hear about this menu.
The Quarry’s food leans heavily into American comfort with some creative flair and a clear emphasis on quality. I watched slider after slider leave the kitchen, and each one looked so good that it almost gave me a full-blown food mood swing. But I was already committed to my fish mission. Still, I mentally bookmarked a few other standout dishes. The chicken and waffle sliders sound like tiny golden flavor bombs. The grilled salmon rice bowl with honey teriyaki probably has that perfect sweet-savory combo. And the rock fries with cajun seasoning, beer cheese, jalapeños, and more? Let’s just say if you love your potatoes dramatic, these are for you.
Now, onto my order. We started with the whipped feta spread, topped with honey and pistachios. It was the sleeper hit of the day: creamy, salty-sweet, a little nutty (like me by mid-August). If they sold it by the pint, I’d bring a cooler. I also got a Caesar salad, because balance, and then the fried perch, which was light and crispy, with just the right amount of seasoning. And I added a side of poutine. I know what you’re thinking: “Perch and poutine?” Yes. Don’t question genius. The poutine was everything I wanted: fries, gravy, cheese curds, and joy.
This place is more than a restaurant, y'all, it’s an experience. Monroe might not be the first place you think of for a summer getaway, but it should be. The wildflowers in the area are some of the best in the state, and the town itself has a laid-back charm that pairs perfectly with long days and open windows. Whether you’re planning a road trip or just looking to escape the city, make The Quarry a priority stop.
Come for the fried fish, stay for the crystal-clear water and killer sunset views. Eat outside, sip something summery, and watch the world go by. Michigan summer doesn’t last forever, but spots like this make it unforgettable.
