This Michigan Preserve Is One Of The Best Places To View Summer Wildflowers

Spring is a glorious time for wildflowers in the Great Lakes State, but summer is no slouch either. There’s a bevy of blooms to enjoy during the warmer months – if you know where to look. One awesome place to see Michigan wildflowers – a particular wildflower, especially – is the Erie Marsh Preserve in Monroe County. Erie Marsh Preserve is located in far southeastern Michigan, near the Ohio border. The preserve underwent a recent restoration thanks to efforts from The Nature Conservancy and local volunteers.

The marsh provides important wetland habitat for a variety of species of concern in Michigan, including several types of birds, amphibians, and aquatic plants.

One plant, in particular, is considered threatened in the Great Lakes State - the American lotus. And the Erie Marsh Preserve offers the critical habitat that the lotus needs to thrive.

It is, in fact, home to one of the last surviving colonies of American lotus in Michigan.

And every July and August, visitors to the preserve are treated to the stunning sight of a field of white and yellow blossoms blanketing the marsh. It's worth a trip to the preserve just to see this singular summertime spectacle.
