With a state dessert AND a state treat, it's no surprise that Maine has some of the best bakeries in America. It's hard to choose a favorite, but this one is up at the top of our list. Despite being located in one of the more touristy destinations, this place is worth every bit of its hype! Looking for the best bakery in Kittery, Maine? Look no further!

Lil's Cafe was created as a meeting place for community members and visitors alike. It's located in Wallingford Square.

The local cafe is named after Lilian Mangos, a special and beloved cashier who once worked the "in-window" at Bob’s Clam Hut in Kittery.

While she wasn't alive to see the opening of Lil's, her memory is very much alive in the stories told by those who knew her.

In the years since it's opening, Lil's Cafe has become a neighborhood installation - catering to everyone in the area who is in need of a good coffee, a perfect cruller and a place to sit and chat.

Speaking of those crullers...they might be what Lil's is most known for!

They're made in lots of flavors, like this maple cruller.

And, this blueberry version!

Baked fresh daily are things like pies...

...and totally unique cakes.

And, it wouldn't be a Maine favorite without their own version of the whoopie pie.

They've mastered the chocolate and vanilla version, and serve up even more unique flavors like this gingerbread version with lemon cream cheese filling & fresh lemon zest.

Lunch hours are from 11am to 3pm and their sandwiches are nothing short of perfection.

Here's a roasted freebird chicken with Greenlaw Gardens heirloom tomatoes, red onion, cucumber, provolone and Greek mayo.

But, the best part of Lil's might be the warm atmosphere created by everyone inside.

Okay, fine, it also might be the cakes!
