Every little small town has that one restaurant that has been around seemingly forever. Everyone around knows the name and the people who own it because the owner has been so steeped in local culture. You have driven by it maybe a thousand times just this year alone but you haven't slowed down to really appreciate it. This is the life of one little restaurant in Hallowell, Maine.
Bolley’s Famous Franks started selling hot dogs during the '60s in Augusta, but in 1972, they moved to their Hallowell location, where they have been ever since.
When you are heading towards the capitol from downtown Hallowell you will pass the train trestle then just a short while later you will see Bolley’s on your right.
The owner of Bolley’s Famous Franks hired a young boy named Donald Pooler and trained him in the restaurant business. Shortly after, Mr. Pooler bought the company in 1997. To this day, Donald and his wife Kimberly run the little hotdog place just outside of downtown.
You can order outside at the walk-up take-out window. Then on a nice warm day, enjoy your meal on one of the outside picnic tables.
Inside you will find a quaint little establishment that looks very much like it did way back in the '70s. There is a certain charm to places untouched by time and you will find that here at Bolley’s.
One of the best menu items is of course the hotdogs. They are famous after all.
You can also order burgers, sandwiches, or even lobster rolls. Try a basket that comes with fries and cole slaw. Or even dig into the ever-popular chili fries as a side.
When you go inside you will see a display case with the most inviting donuts. These wonderful homemade donuts are made fresh every day, and they are almost as famous as the franks.
Some of the flavors you can order are plain, chocolate, cinnamon, and molasses. They are made fresh and warm so any one you choose will be an excellent choice. These donuts are thick and filling.
