If you love food, there aren't many better places to visit than Maine. While we certainly have some incredible spots that have received national acclaim, it's the smaller spots that we think are best. Head out of the bigger towns, off-the-beaten path and explore some of the restaurants on this list. They embody what Vacationland is all about. If you've got other options, let us know!

1. Owls Head General Store, Owls Head

You might be suprised to see this general store be called one of the most "Maine" restaurants in Vacationland, but we think its reputation is key. It just re-opened and we're looking forward to another summer of sloppy, seven napkin burgers. It's piled with cheese, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce and onions along with a hearty slather of mustard, mayonnaise and ketchup. Visit them at: 2 South Shore Drive, Owls Head / 207-596-6038

2. Fat Boy Drive In, Brunswick

From seafood to fried accompaniments (awesome onion rings, for instance) there is plenty on offer. But, try the Whoperburger first. It's classic and messy, just as it should be at a place with "fat" in the name. And, the good news is Take advantage of the throwback drive-in feel and munch out in your car like the good ol' days! 3. Frosty's Donuts, Various

Another Maine shop, through and through! Frosty's was originally owned by the Frost family in the 1950s. While it was sold, the shop is still serving up donuts using the original Bob Frost recipes. We love that each is customizable at the make-your-own station. Visit them at: 54 Maine St, Brunswick / 207-729-4258.

4. Nook & Cranny, Baileyville

This is Washington County's "Best Kept Secret." They serve up seriously good cuisine with great local flair - all in a converted chicken coop! A family business through and through, you'll feel right at home the second you step inside. Try the Atlantic salmon topped Raye's mustard and southern bourbon finished in the broiler. 5. Bayview Takeout, Beals

Just like some of the others on this list, the love of this spot might exist in part because of the outside ambiance. Bayview Takeout is located on Beals Island in the aptly named town of Beals. The location, overlooking the bay between the island and the mainland is perfect and offers a wonderful view over to Jonesport. This isn't your average, run-of-the-mill lobster roll. In addition to being full of meaty goodness, it also comes with the claw. Perfect for those that like to have a little something extra with their lunch. 6. Blair Hill Inn, Greenville

The food here is incredible, but it’s the unforgettable setting that really impresses us. The Blair Hill Inn, located in beautiful Greenville, was once a gentleman's estate and a breeding farm. It was built as a mansion in 1891 and has been restored to become a boutique hotel with truly unique decor. Today, the bed and breakfast features ten rooms, set on 21 beautiful acres. 7. Palace Diner, Biddeford

Originally opened back when Biddeford was a textile mill town, the Palace Diner has been around since 1927. Known for their simple menu items that come impeccably prepared, you won't find typical diner fare at The Palace. While the names may sound familiar, each ingredient is made fresh and local (whenever it makes sense) and the taste is nothing short of perfection. Diner food can sometimes taste quickly prepared, but here individual care is taken with each dish. Visit them at: 18 Franklin Street, Biddeford / 207-284-0015.

8. Barnacle Billy's, Ogunquit

While the outside might fool you, Mainers who love this spot know that it's a gem. Spend some time outside watching the boats go in and out of Perkin's Cove for the full experience. Visit them at: 50 Perkins Cove, Ogunquit / 207-646-5575

9. The Spirit of Massachusetts, Kennebunk

This 125-schooner was built in New England and served as an educational vessel crossing the globe as a goodwill ambassador for The Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 30 years later, The Spirit of Massachusetts was brought back to be restored and repurposed at her new home in Kennebunk. Despite having a great menu, The Spirit Restaurant truly shines as a bar. It just might be the perfect place to tip back a few tasty beverages on any of the nice, remaining summer days here in Maine. 10. Portland Lobster Co, Portland

It doesn't get much more Maine than digging into a lobster roll while overlooking the Old Port's working waterfront. Plan your visit on a beautiful summer night and you'll have the chance to dance to some fun live bands outside. Visit them at: 180 Commercial Street, Portland / 207-775-2112
