7 Delightfully Delicious Snacks That Are Uniquely New Orleans
Discover seven must-try snacks in New Orleans, ranging from sweet to savory.
Sometimes you just need a tasty snack to get you through your day. Whether your preference is salty or sweet (or both), there are dozens of places around New Orleans to get your fix. Luckily, New Orleans knows a thing or two about food, and below we’ve listed seven delightfully delicious New Orleans snacks that everyone should try at least once.
1. Beignets
This iconic New Orleans snack has a long history with the Crescent City, and its many tourists' first stop when they visit. Cafe Du Monde is the place to go when you’re in the mood for this sweet treat, and of course, you have to wash it down with a cup of their delicious coffee.
2. Charbroiled Oysters
Switching from sweet to savory for a moment, you can’t pass up the opportunity to eat charbroiled oysters from Drago’s. They make a great appetizer for the table to share, or a meal on their own.
3. Praline Bacon
There's never a wrong time to eat bacon and Elizabeth's serves up some of the best in the city. The praline bacon strips have a sweet and smoky flavor and it's impossible to eat just one. This may not be one of the foods New Orleans is known for, but it's definitely worth seeking out.
4. Doberge Cake
If you’ve never had a doberge cake, you’re in for a real treat. This New Orleans cake consists of six layers of buttermilk cake, each separated by a layer of delicious custard filling and then frosted in buttercream and fondant. While there are many bakeries around town that offer doberge cake, Gambino’s Bakery is the only bakery in town with the original recipe from Beulah Ledner, who created the cake in 1946.
5. Snoballs
Hansen’s has been a local favorite since 1939, and it's easily one of the sweetest New Orleans snacks in town. These aren’t your average snoballs, either. Their homemade syrups take these snoballs to the next level, and you’ll find yourself coming back here again and again to try all the flavors.
6. Pralines
For pralines, you can’t go wrong with Leah’s. Nestled in the heart of the Vieux Carre, Leah’s Pralines has been a New Orleans tradition since 1944. Their pralines are handmade, the old-fashioned way and they’re simply melt-in-your-mouth-good.
7. King Cake
The king of Louisiana snacks, King Cakes grace everyone's kitchen countertops during Mardi Gras season. This seasonal treat only comes around once a year, although there are many bakeries around town that make them year-round. Everyone’s got their own preference on who has the best king cake in New Orleans, and our pick is Randazzo’s. They’ve been baking up delicious sweet treats since 1965, and you can expect to wait in line for one of their amazing king cakes.
