New Orleans is renowned for its iconic dishes that attract food lovers and chefs from around the world.

Food is a major part of New Orleans. We are known for our amazing cuisine, people come from far and wide to try it and chefs travel here to study under our talented chefs. If you’ve lived in this city for a while, then you should have tried these iconic dishes.

1. Beignets

If you’ve never had a beignet then stop what you’re doing and drive to the nearest Cafe Du Monde because these pillowy desserts are absolutely divine. And of course, you have to pair it with a cup of coffee!

2. Oysters Rockefeller

Invented right here in New Orleans at Antoine’s in the French Quarter, this dish is a must-try. Named for the richness of the sauce, several places have tried to duplicate this amazing dish but everyone knows Antoine’s has the original.

3. Bananas Foster

Did you know bananas foster was invented in New Orleans? The dessert was invented over at Brennan’s by chef Paul Blange in 1951. At the time, New Orleans was a major hub for bananas being imported from South America, and they wanted to take advantage of the plethora of bananas coming through the city.

4. Po’boys

Everyone has their own local joint they visit when they’re in the mood for a po’boy. From Parkway to Domilise’s, there are dozens of places to go to when you want a good old fashioned po’boy.

5. Snoball

Specifically, a snoball from Hansen’s. Their homemade syrups really do make a difference!

6. Muffuletta

When it comes to this colossal sandwich, you have to go to Central Grocery, where it all began. It was invented in 1906 and quickly became a signature New Orleans dish.

7. King Cake

During Mardi Gras, King Cakes are everywhere. Many people wait in long lines (looking at you, Randazzo’s) just to get their hands on one, but honestly even if you picked one up from the grocery store, it’s delicious.
