Can a sandwich change a life? (And not just in a really good, life-changing sandwich kind of way). The answer might surprise you. At Kentucky's DV8 Kitchen, folks struggling with addiction are given a second chance at employment, and it's truly a life-changing experience. Addiction is a lonely, lonely place to be, and the decision to get help is something that should be celebrated, supported, and encouraged. Yet for people in the early stages of substance abuse recovery, it can be extremely difficult -- nearly impossible -- to find employers who are willing to take a chance on them. But DV8 Kitchen Owners Diane and Rob Perez are willing to take that chance, and it's created a sea change in many, many people's lives.
DV8 Kitchen is a fast-casual restaurant located in Lexington, Kentucky, that serves up fresh, healthy, and delicious food.
But that's just part of the story.
Five years ago, Rob and Diane Perez found drug paraphernalia in the garbage at one of their restaurants, and realized that one of their servers had been using drugs in the bathroom. It wasn't the first of their staff to be affected by the opioid crisis, either. But instead of getting angry, feeling despondent, or simply ignoring the problem, the Perezes rolled up their sleeves, made a plan, and got to work.
"Diane believed that we should use our business to help people in a meaningful way to express our faith," says Rob -- and that's exactly what this couple did.
In September 2017, Rob and Diane launched DV8 Kitchen in Lexington, Kentucky, a restaurant that not only hires people currently in treatment for drug addiction but also focuses its entire business model on the recovery process.
Using the restaurant as a tool for recovery and rehabilitation, the Perezes hire people in need of hope -- and a second chance.
The Perezes know how therapeutic baking, and the process of making something with your own two hands, is. Food really is magic.
And it shows: the staff at DV8 Kitchen create some of the most delicious, inspired fare that is beautiful culinary art.
Everything at DV8 Kitchen, from the sandwiches to the cinnamon rolls, is made with an abundance of love and care.
Rob believes that by providing employment to people in active recovery, investing in employees, and giving diners a top-notch restaurant experience, there are three outcomes.
First: DV8 Kitchen's employees will connect their actions to the success of the restaurant, something they are all invested in, and clearly doing.
Second: "we believe every person in recovery through effort, standards, and professional attitude can have sustainable, life-long employment -- if given a chance," says Rob.
Finally, Rob says he hopes DV8 Kitchen will provide a positive example and encourage others to offer second-chance employment.
Because life is hard, and we all deserve second chances.
The Perezes are proof-positive that just one person (or, in this case, two) can effect big, positive change.
Because all it takes is one person to stand behind someone who is struggling and say "You can do it; I believe in you."
What Rob and Mindy have created at DV8 Kitchen is nothing short of extraordinary; it's the kind of place the world needs more of. Maybe you will be inspired by their story because even the smallest action can have a big impact.
And there are many, many people who can speak to the big, positive, lasting impact that DV8 Kitchen has had in their lives.
Which brings us full circle to our original question: can a sandwich really change the world?
Absolutely it can.
