Kentucky has many historic destinations that are perfect for interesting day or road trips. Although our state is mostly known for bourbon, we also have an impressive selection of vineyards that also make great excursions. If you combine history and wine together, then you have this Kentucky destination that has so much to offer. Baker-Bird Winery in Augusta is the oldest commercial estate winery in America and it's definitely a must-visit in the Bluegrass State.
Baker-Bird Winery can be found atop a hill in the charming town of Augusta, right along the Ohio River.
This property dates back to 1797, when the very first commercial vineyard in the United States was planted right here in the Kentucky Bluegrass Region.
With a strong German influence of immigrants in the area, many impressive wines were being produced in the region by the mid-1800s.
The Abraham Baker wine cellar remains on the property of the current winery and is on the United States National Historic Registry, the Civil War Heritage Trail, and the Freedom Trail.
During a visit to the vineyard, you have to spend time in this historic cellar. It's 40 feet wide, 40 feet tall, and rumor has it, likely haunted.
This space is the oldest and largest wine cellar that is open to the public in the country. That's quite impressive for a state that is not necessarily known for its wine! This arched cellar is more than just a historic room; it is also used for private events such as weddings, showers, and other gatherings.
Within the restored historic building is a lovely tasting room and where you'll want to start your exploration of the property.
The winery is open Saturday and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. No reservations are necessary, but you can call ahead if you have a larger group.
Along with tastings, there are complimentary tours available of the property.
You can also purchase a cheese plate or bring your own snacks to enjoy inside or out on a picnic table. Baker-Bird Winery also offers packages for pairs or groups of four that include a deluxe history tour, cheese platter, and souvenir glasses. Don't forget to take home a bottle of wine (or a few)!
Baker-Bird Winery is named after its original owner and current owner, which is so appropriate since it perfectly marries the old and new.
With a historic setting that has been beautifully restored and a modern offering of delicious wines, a visit to Baker-Bird Winery is sure to leave a lasting impression and plenty of memories.
