Iowa is a hub of great Italian food, but hidden in the small Fayette County city of Oelwein might be one of the state's best-hidden gems. Not only does Leo's Italian Restaurant serve up huge portions at reasonable prices, but it's also been dishing up its famous fare since 1922. As it celebrates its centennial, this three-generation family-owned legend has a lot of memories to celebrate.
Leo's has been serving great Italian food in Oelwein since 1922 when Frank and Angelina Leo opened it as a humble grocery.
But it was their eldest son Nick who created the Leo's everyone knows today when he opened a Tavern in 1940 filled with old family recipes that are still used to this day.
Today, the third-generation heirs of the Leo family keep things running strong, with Leo's Italian transforming into a modern dining destination.
Do the sandwiches taste just a little bit better than anywhere else? That's because Leo's bakes all its own bread every day.
There's no better way to sample Leo's cuisine than with a pizza to share and a plate of the signature garlic bread.
For a more unique option, try the famous Panino - a pressed sandwich filled with sausage, pepperoni, marinara, and mozzarella.
For those with a heartier appetite, the Tour of Italy is the only way to go. This massive sampler platter gives you a taste of lasagna, fettuccini Alfredo, manicotti, and meatballs.
Upstairs, step back in time at Generations Lounge - a charming casual bar that's the biggest addition this generation has made to Leo's.
Old-timers and newcomers alike come to party, as the lounge plays host to some of the most talented musical acts in Iowa.
Leo's Italian Restaurant and Generations Lounge has changed a lot over the years. If you've paid a visit at any stage of its history, let us know what's new and what's stayed the same in the comments section. The centennial is likely to be a big celebration with a lot of specials, so make sure to keep an eye on their website and Facebook page for all the latest.
