Experience Winter Romance and Dine in Twinkle-Lit Beauty at These Cozy Lakefront Igloos in Idaho
Dinner and cocktails in a waterfront igloo just hits different.
Whimsical, seasonal dining options like igloos, yurts, and backcountry cabins have become a major trend in recent years, and I'm a huge fan. After all, what could be better than an intimate and secluded meal with a view? But what originally began as a novel concept has since blossomed into some of the most creative and sought-after dining experiences in the country, ranging from chic, high-end tastings to memorable, off-grid nights under the stars.
Recently, I stumbled upon what I think is one of the most incredible dining experiences in the state, and it's absolutely perfect for a romantic evening with someone special (especially with Valentine's Day right around the corner!).
Here in Idaho, we love being outside as much as we can, for as long as we can, doing whatever we can, and that includes wining and dining. That's why when winter rolls around, a number of restaurants across the state embrace a cozy theme, adding and transforming outdoor dining rooms into creative, heated getaways that are perfect for a fairytale night out. But just when you thought al fresco dining was closed up for the post-holiday season, in comes igloo dining—a new concept that we're welcoming with open arms. These warm and toasty geodesic domes are the "coolest" way to dine in style while enjoying phenomenal views of Idaho's star-filled skies and mountain panoramas.
And what better place than northern Idaho's most beloved resort town?
Cradled between the Bitterroot Mountains and the Selkirk Range, Coeur d'Alene is perhaps most known for its iconic lake and stunning Panhandle scenery. Even in winter, adventurous off-season visitors can book spectacular lake cruises, dive into a world of snowy trails, and immerse themselves in waterfront luxury at the lake's crown jewel: The Coeur d'Alene Resort. It's easily one of the most idyllic getaways in the state for anyone looking for an evening or weekend spent enjoying both glittering city life and snow-kissed landscapes all in one fell swoop.

But when the most romantic day of the year is on the horizon, there's no better place to be than the Whispers Lounge at the resort. Or, perhaps more specifically, the lounge's spectacular "Igloos on the Lake."
Ah, mon amour!
In my travels over the years, I've had the unique pleasure of dining in countless gorgeous waterfront restaurants, but there's something truly special about the igloos at The Coeur d'Alene Resort. These phenomenal, crystal-clear bubbles offer unrivaled views of the water right from the Whispers patio, creating the most deliriously romantic setting imaginable.
Each heated igloo is beautifully furnished with cozy seating, a toasty fireplace, and table space a-plenty for your meal. Come nightfall, the patio's twinkle lights flicker on, the city bursts into glorious dots of color, the skies unfold into a star-studded canvas, and every glittering pinpoint of light reflects beautifully in the deep blue water just steps from your personal dining dome. It's private, scenic, and the perfect way to share some quality time with your boo without shouting over a crowded dining room.
Pro Tip: If you don't tell your date that their eyes sparkle even brighter than the view, you're missing a prime opportunity!
The Igloos on the Lake at the Coeur d'Alene Resort are typically only open December through March, but February might just be my own favorite time to experience them. With the holiday crowds gone, there's a stillness in the air that makes an evening under the stars here that much more memorable.
As Valentine's Day gets closer, the resort also adds a few extra decorative touches to the igloos to dress them up for a truly magical evening in celebration of all things romance.
The menu for this one-of-a-kind waterfront dining experience differs from Whispers' main menu, featuring refreshingly creative cocktails, Idaho-inspired drinks, and shareable appetizers that'll warm you up and ignite the fireworks.
From the warm and lightly sweet Huckleberry Hot Chocolate (*swoon*) to the frosty, fruity drinks that'll whisk you away to the tropics (the Yacht Club is a must!) to the prime rib sliders appetizer, this sweet waterfront experience is the perfect avant-goût before heading out on a romantic excursion downtown. Your taste buds will thank you for diving into one of the menu's main courses, like the blackened salmon with mango salsa and rice pilaf. Then, wrap it up with a deliciously divine dockside cheesecake.
If you're planning a memorable Valentine's Day experience this year, when it comes to Idaho's most romantic restaurants, the views and ambiance at Whispers' Igloos on the Lake are hard to beat. However, note that reservations are required for evening bookings and there's a minimum order per group regardless of when you dine. Each private igloo has a maximum occupancy of six adults (21+), so feel free to grab a few friends and enjoy a selfie-filled night on the water in good company.
Either way, if you're looking for an exceptional north Idaho experience that breaks the mold, these stunning waterfront igloos are the ultimate winter treat, whether for a chic Galentine's Day celebration or a waterfront proposal at one of the most romantic spots in Idaho. Cheers!
