This Is the Best Buffet in Hawaii, Known for Its Classic Luau Fare

The Voyagers of the Pacific at the Big Island's Royal Kona Resort may have the best buffet of classic luau fare in Hawaii. It's not just about the food, though—it's a whole experience.

I'm going to preface this article by confessing that I am not really a buffet guy—I prefer to order what I want, have it brought to me at the table, and not think about it anymore. That said, there are times and places where a buffet is appropriate, like airline clubs. Another buffet-appropriate occasion in my book is a luau. I really have a weakness for classic (some may call it stereotypical, but they're welcome to get out of the buffet line and let me play through) luau fare: kalua pig, poi, fish, rice, coconut cake, mai tais... You get the drill. Not only is it delicious, but it also comes with an experience, which is another thing I appreciate. You'll find my favorite luau buffet in Hawaii in Kailua-Kona at the Royal Kona Resort on the Big Island.

The Royal Kona is home to the Voyagers of the Pacific luau, which takes place four nights a week on the lovely shoreline of Kailua Bay, with the ocean, sunset, and stars as its backdrop. I've been to several luaus on three islands (I know they're touristy, but hey, I'm a tourist). I'm particularly fond of this one because it's more intimate than those you'd find in places like Kaanapali or Waikiki. I like the setting better than Polynesian Cultural Center, and Old Lahaina Luau is out of the running for this article because it switched to table service in the wake of the pandemic.

Dinner is, of course, served buffet-style and features all the classic luau fare I love. The pork is slow roasted in an underground imu, and if you arrive early enough, you can witness the disinterment of the entree, accompanied by a traditional ceremony. Much of the rest of the meal is locally sourced, as well: the fruits and vegetables are local, the fish is island-caught, and the poi is pounded from taro grown in the Waipio Valley.

A square of haupia pudding or coconut cake serves as a perfect finish to the luau meal. Drinks, including alcoholic beverages, are included in the price of an adult admission, and the bar is open—so be careful if you're driving. (I can attest that that fourth mai tai kinda sneaks up on you.)

While you're enjoying the meal, you're treated to a show of traditional Polynesian hula that chronicles the tale of the voyagers who brought the art to the Hawaiian islands when they settled here. This means you'll get to enjoy hula styles from several island cultures, including Tahiti and Hawaii, before ending with a Samoan siva afi—a fire knife dance that provides a dramatic grand finale for the revue.

It's not just about the food and drink; it's the whole experience, and I think, as far as buffets in Hawaii go, you won't find a better experience than the one offered by Voyagers of the Pacific at the Royal Kona Resort. To see a complete schedule and ticket information, visit the luau's website. Is there a buffet in Hawaii that you like? We'd love to hear about your favorites over on our Nomination page.
