Nearly 1 in 6 residents of Delaware are of Irish ancestry, according to statisticalatlas.com. Joe and Shirley Sheridan came from Ireland to the United States only in 1985, giving their Sheridan's Irish Pub & Restaurant even more of an aura of authenticity. Their pub and restaurant, which opened in 2004, is in the middle of the town of Smyrna, about 14 miles north of Dover. The facility looks quaint and welcoming from the street and has room for 114 occupants inside and 52 guests on an outdoor deck in the summer.
The line to get inside is not always as long as on St. Patrick's Day, but the pub is a popular place.
Here's a side view of the pub, and don't be alarmed by the fire truck. The department members were just hungry that day, according to the owners.
Joe and Shirley Sheridan are front and center in this family photo and in the operation of the pub.
These plates illustrate how the menu features extensive lists of both American and Irish items.
The pub's logo features a heart, representing the Sheridans' love of their homeland and devotion to the pub. They formerly also operated a venue called A Piece of Ireland before closing it to focus on the pub.
Notice the shrimp on the skewer. A unique way to enjoy Cajun shrimp at the pub is folded into the potato pancake that's the centerpiece of a variety of boxty dishes.
The owners reduced their days and of hours of operation during the winter, citing a staffing shortage, so check the pub's website for the current hours. There's also a complete menu and information about nightly specials and upcoming events.
