The Overstuffed Sandwiches From This Connecticut Deli Are the Stuff of Dreams

The best deli in Connecticut, hiding in charming Cos Cob, dishes up unique updated versions of classic Jewish delicatessen fare.

There is nothing I love more than a classic Jewish deli. These were the places I grew up, digging into oversized sandwiches, crispy-fried knishes, and tart and tangy pickles served right out of the barrel. For a while, it seemed like these iconic institutions were becoming rarer and rarer, but a new generation of deli chefs has picked up the banner and is restoring the old ways with a modern twist. That's exactly what's happening at Greenwich & Delancey in Cos Cob, the best deli in Connecticut, bar none. This innovative kosher deli by chef and entrepreneur David Teyf is getting rave reviews for its old-school skills, such as curing and brining, combined with a menu that fuses rare Ashkenazi delicacies with modern cooking techniques. It was such a hit in its original location that a second location opened in New York City. The original is still going strong, and I consider it one of Connecticut's must-visit spots.

There are few meals more indulgent than the one at a deli, featuring oversized sandwiches, perfectly cured meats, and old-school delights you might not have seen in a long time. Still, every restaurant needs to evolve to stay relevant, and that's exactly what's happened at Greenwich & Delancey.

Of course, every deli is only as good as its signature meats, and the pastrami at Greenwich & Delancey has quickly gotten rave reviews. It's tender, smoky, and flavorful, and can be had in a classic sandwich or, if you're really going all out, enjoy it carved tableside in the restaurant's signature entree.

But that's just the start. The restaurant has a very extensive menu, with appetizers including Eastern European dumplings, entrees including acclaimed fish dishes, and a rarity for a deli - a liquor license so you can have a classic drink with your meal. And for those not imbibing in spirits - yes, they do have Dr. Brown's soda!

If there's one thing every deli needs, besides great smoked meats, it's appetizers. Yes, they have smoked fish here - lox, herring, and more. It's the perfect appetizer to share with friends before digging into entrees.

And, of course, we can't forget about a sweet finish. The desserts here are all dairy-free, as this is a kosher meat restaurant, which means this is also a fantastic place for anyone with dairy allergies. Don't miss the babka!
