This Speakeasy Hidden Behind a Secret Passcode in Connecticut Is Perfect for a Date Night

We've got the inside scoop on where locals go for drinks behind a secret door.

Speakeasies got their start during Prohibition, when people had to sneak into these illicit bars to obtain alcohol. Once inside, you'd have to "speak easy" (i.e., softly) so as not to draw attention to the illegal establishments. While Prohibition is no longer the law of the land and there are plenty of legal bars in Connecticut perfect for a night out on the town, we actually have a few speakeasies in the Nutmeg State, or at least speakeasy-themed bars that provide a fun alternative to a typical establishment. One of our favorites is I Know You Know in New Britain. Let's take a peek, shall we?

Step Through a Bookcase and Into the Roaring Twenties

I Know You Know is as nondescript as you'd expect from the outside. This hidden spot has covered windows so you can't see what's going on inside, and it's easy to think you're at the wrong building. But the inside tells a different story. Once you've given the secret passcode (available on the website) and then pushed through a revolving bookcase, you'll be transported back in time to the Roaring Twenties. The Prohibition-themed bar features curated cocktails and a delicious menu of eats, plus a fun ambiance you won't find at your average watering hole.

Menu Highlights: Handcrafted Cocktails and Light Bites

One of the authentic details we love is that many of the drinks served here use authentic recipes from the 1920s. These beverages are handcrafted and have garnered quite a loyal following. Folks enjoy the creative flavors and the fact that the alcohol isn't too heavy-handed.

If you'd like a bite to eat, you'll also find a small menu of tapas that are perfect for sharing with the table. The truffle tots come highly recommended, as do the Cuban sliders. Other options include calamari, chicken wings, and fried shrimp. For something sweet, you can't go wrong with the Tres leches! Whether you're visiting with friends or your significant other, you'll agree that this is a perfect place to spend some quality time with a loved one.

If you're tired of the typical bar scene and looking for something a little unique, you won't want to miss this speakeasy in New Britain, Connecticut. To learn more about this speakeasy, be sure to check out the official I Know You Know website. I Know You Know is open Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to midnight and Saturday and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. We recommend arriving on the earlier side to avoid a wait—but by all accounts, it's worth the wait!
