The Timeless Buffalo Restaurant Everyone Needs To Visit At Least Once

While Buffalo's medical campus is evolving, there are some things that are simply better left unchanged. Ulrich's Tavern is one of them. Ulrich's is Buffalo's oldest tavern, located in the heart of the downtown medical campus on the corner of Ellicott and Virginia Street. Similar to the fact that the exterior and interior charm have remained mostly the same since its humble beginnings, the tavern itself also remains a crowd favorite.

Ulrich's has been in business since 1868.

You can find the tavern at 674 Ellicott Street, across from Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Ulrich's serves up authentic German cuisine and Buffalo-centric favorites.

The tavern boasts an original bar, vintage 1920s tables and chairs, and several details that pay homage to the restaurant's humble beginnings.

If you're lucky enough to take a peek into the basement of the tavern, you'll find a Prohibition-era elevator which was used to raise and lower alcohol. Sneaky!

Today, Ulrich's doesn't have to hide their alcoholic offerings.

The tavern has several local brews on tap as well as a full selection of "the hard stuff" behind the bar.

From blue-collar to white-collar, everyone is welcomed here!

Ulrich's once served a mainly blue-collar crowd, being positioned near the old Trico plant. Today, it's a favorite for the medical professional community, where you can often find off-duty nurses and doctors enjoying a much-needed post-shift refreshment.

Because of its proximity to the medical campus, Ulrich's is also a popular spot for families to take a breather from waiting rooms and treatment appointments.

Along with its rich history, Ulrich's also has a menu full of savory food items.

Comfort food, anyone?

Whether you're in the mood for classic German food (one wiener schnitzel, coming right up!), a Buffalo beef on weck, or house-made soup and salad, Ulrich's has something to titillate even the pickiest of tastebuds.

Talk about vintage charm! Have you ever been to Ulrich's for dinner or drinks? Tell us your favorite menu item or memory from the tavern in the comments below!
