We Tried Out-of-This-World Shakes at Galaxy Diner in Arizona

You'll find some of the best milkshakes in Arizona at Galaxy Diner. Enjoy a first-person experience by one of our contributing writers!

When was the last time you had a great milkshake that was so deliciously sweet you could probably drink one every day? Well, I recently had one at Galaxy Diner, a retro diner in Flagstaff, and I am still dreaming of it! Whether you're just off the ski slopes in the winter, finished with a hike in the forest, or exploring all that Flagstaff has to offer, I urge you to find your way to Galaxy Diner for a hearty meal and one of its many handspun milkshake options.

Located on Arizona's Historic Route 66, Galaxy Diner is one of my favorite roadside stops for a great meal. Not only that but its retro theme truly makes the ambiance a family-friendly place.

Walk through the doors, and you'll instantly notice the vintage jukebox along with dozens of black and white photos of famous celebrities from days gone by. Head to the hostess stand, and you'll see that the entire restaurant follows the same 1950s-style theme.

The hostess sat my friend and I at a booth, handed us our menus, and brought us waters as we looked at the extensive menu. It was mid-afternoon, and we were hungry after checking out the fall foliage and unexpected snow at Snowbowl. It took quite a while to nail down exactly what we wanted to eat, but we knew that milkshakes were on the horizon after our late lunch.

After looking at the menu, my friend settled on an egg-white omelet with vegetables, a side of hash browns, and a biscuit. He was impressed with how good everything tasted. I went with one of my favorite things—a breakfast burrito.

Anytime there's a breakfast burrito option on a menu, that is what I go for. I don't know what it is about a breakfast burrito that I love so much—I guess everything! To me, it's the ultimate comfort food, and the Speedy Gonzalez Breakfast Burrito at Galaxy Diner did not disappoint. Filled with scrambled eggs, cheese, and potatoes (I made slight modifications for my dietary needs) and served with a side of salsa, guac, and sour cream, I was in heaven. And while there was a choice of hash browns, I opted for fruit instead. Partly because that's what I was craving, but mostly because of the milkshakes we had yet to order.

Now for the best part—milkshakes! But here's the problem. There are 100 milkshake options on the menu, which looks like a 1950s vinyl record, by the way. With so many delicious and unique options, it was hard to choose. I thought about the last time I was here with my daughter, and we had shared a vanilla milkshake (her choice). I remember it being incredibly good, perhaps one of the best milkshakes in Flagstaff, if not the state of Arizona.

In addition to flavors like Butterfinger, Heath Bar, Candy Bar Heaven (sounds heavenly, doesn't it?), Dr. Pepper, lemon meringue, raspberry cheesecake, Oreo brownie, pecan pie, and dozens upon dozens more. There was also a seasonal special. And that seasonal special was the one we went with. Okay, I know you're now wondering what it is... It's pumpkin pie, and it was one of the best milkshakes I have ever had!

Our server is the one who made it, and we were able to watch her over at the machine behind the diner's counter as she added the ingredients and gave it a spin. It took a while, but it was well worth the wait. Not only was it smooth and frosty, but it tasted exactly like a pumpkin pie, just in liquid form. We took the shakes to go, but when I finished mine, I wished I had ordered another for our drive back to Scottsdale.

I highly recommend stopping at Galaxy Diner, a retro diner in Flagstaff, for some of the best food and milkshakes in town.
