The Hidden Castle In Wisconsin That Almost No One Knows About

The History Museum at the Castle in Appleton is one of those spots that locals seem to know about, but everyone else is in the dark on. This stunning building from the 1920's used to be a Masonic temple and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Now it's a very cool museum with history of the Fox Valley dating back to before Wisconsin was a state.

Please note, the History Museum at the Castle is temporarily closed.

Situated near the Fox River, this gorgeous structure is also near the Lawrence University campus.

Though just around 100 years old, the building features Norman Revival architecture and is reminiscent of a medieval castle. There's the rough-hewn exterior, plus big leaded glass windows, vaulted ceilings, and exposed beams.

You'd have to go looking for the museum, but once you find it, there's no mistaking that in the middle of the state, there's a somewhat hidden castle just waiting to be found.

The museum is an important compendium of local history and you'll often find university students there doing research.

They have a rotating calendar of exhibits from both national and local sources.

As well as one of the biggest Houdini exhibits you'll ever find — he was from the area. The hands-on display about the magician is fun and informative for adults and kids alike.

The museum also features a stunning collection of stained glass windows that tell the story of the history of the Fox Valley.

Even without its awesome exterior, you should plan a trip to this very cool local museum — it's a gem and we're lucky to have it.

But no one would blame you if you head here just for some views of the unique and imposing building.

One certainly doesn't expect to find a castle in the middle of Wisconsin, but the History Museum at the Castle definitely proves them wrong.

The History Museum at the Castle is located at 330 E. College Avenue., Appleton, WI 54911. Admission is $8 for adults, $4 for children and $22 for a family of four. The Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Have you ever visited? Let us know in the comments.
