Back in a corner of Summers County, there is a deal-seekers destination tucked away in the beautiful Allegheny Highlands. For 16 years, Pence Springs Flea Market in Pence Springs has been a gathering place for thrifters and vendors every summer Sunday. There’s almost no kind of goods you won’t find here, from pottery to produce, tools to toys, antiques to animals, clothes to carvings. In addition to bargain prices, you’ll find a relaxed, family-friendly, and pet-friendly atmosphere, with handicapped-accessible premises. Welcome to one of the best flea markets in West Virginia.
During the months of April through October, the market opens at 8:00 a.m. every Sunday, rain or shine, and runs as late as vendors are still selling.
Come prepared for a full day’s adventure with some haggling and plenty of good down-home friendliness!
On the sprawling premises, you’ll find concession stands where you can buy homemade items for lunch or a cool treat.
Also on the property lies Pence Springs itself, enclosed in a spring house that dates back over 100 years and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the 1870s, a resort - the Pence Springs Hotel - was built nearby to attract tourists from the eastern lowlands to enjoy the cool mountain climate and the revitalizing mineral water. The hotel closed in 1929 during the Great Depression, was later a prison, and is now home to the Greenbrier Academy for Girls. The imposing and historic building can be seen up the hill from the market grounds.
The spring still flows today and visitors are free to try it, but the sulfur smell is enough to give pause to most!
Have you ever shopped or sold at this market? What sorts of bargains did you find? Did you try a sip of the spring water?
Whatever you’re looking for, you can be sure you’ll find it at a good price at the Pence Springs Flea Market. Or if you can’t find it, you’ll come away with some other kind of treasure you didn’t know you needed! As a bonus, while you’ll probably have a long drive on back roads to get to this market that's tucked between Hinton and Alderson, you’ll get to enjoy some of the state’s most beautiful mountain countryside on the way.
