7 Destinations Way Up North In Washington That Are So Worth The Drive

Northern Washington offers spectacular and often overlooked destinations perfect for nature lovers and adventurers.

Washingtonians love to tell you why they prefer Eastern or Western Washington, but there's a lot more to our state, and sometimes some pretty spectacular spots get overlooked. The northern region of the Evergreen State is especially amazing. If you'd like to get to know it better, start with these nine destinations.

1. Washington Pass Overlook

Located along the North Cascades Highway, Washington Pass Overlook is an amazing place to stop and take in the scenery. A short paved trail takes you to a platform with views of Liberty Bell and other jagged peaks.

2. Trail of the Cedars Nature Walk

Located up in the North Cascades, the 1.9 mile Trail of The Cedars Loop is one of the most visually stunning trails in the state. You'll find the trailhead near the foot of Main Street in the tiny town of Newhalem.

3. Bull Hill Guest Ranch, Kettle Falls

This large working cattle ranch dates all the way back to 1903, and now it's the perfect place to get away from the chaos of everyday life. You'll be surrounded by the unique beauty of northeastern Washington, and the activities (horseback riding, fly fishing, and cattle drives, just to name a few) are fantastic.

4. Winthrop

Winthrop is located in the north-central part of the state, meaning it's not always easy for most Washingtonians to reach. But saying it's worth the drive is an understatement -- the town itself is delightful, and the Methow Valley is gorgeous.

5. Birch Bay

This quiet, beachfront community sits just a few miles from the Canadian border in between Blaine and Bellingham. It's a delightful place to spend a day or a weekend (camping at Birch Bay State Park is easy and fun).

6. Mount Baker Scenic Byway

The Mount Baker Scenic Byway (State Route 542) is a 58 mile stretch of pure beauty. Not only will you take in unparalleled mountain views, but you'll pass waterfalls and old-growth forest groves as well.

7. Ladder Creek Falls

Ladder Creek Falls is located behind the Gorge Powerhouse in tiny town of Newhalem in the North Cascades. It's easy to find, easy to reach, and absolutely gorgeous.

Northern Washington is highly underrated. But no matter which region is your personal favorite, you still get to live in the best state in the country.
