You Can Take A Magical Bioluminescence Kayak Tour In Washington
Discovery Sea Kayaks offers a magical bioluminescence kayak tour around the San Juan Islands.
Kayaking is a fun, healthy hobby... and kayaking around the San Juan Islands, in particular, is an experience that will make you thank the lucky stars you live in Washington. For years, a professional tour company called Discovery Sea Kayaks has been leading kayak tours around this beautiful destination. This year, they've added a bioluminescence tour to their lineup, and it's even more magical than it sounds.
Discovery Sea Kayaks consists of a small group of well-trained, professional guides with the goal of showing off the beauty of the San Juans through kayak tours.
They're all about the small groups here, so social distancing is a given.
Bioluminescence is, by definition, the production and emission of light by a living organism.
It's a form of chemoluminescence, which is the emission of light (hence the "luminescence").
Bioluminescence occurs frequently in many marine vertebrates and invertebrates, organisms, and bacteria.
And aside from being scientifically amazing, it's pretty fantastic to look at.
Discovery Sea's Bioluminescence Kayak Tour is a four-hour bucket list adventure, and it's well worth the $125 price tag.
Your small group will launch just before sunset, watching as the sun sinks below the horizon. Traveling close together, you'll pass through plenty of areas where the disturbance of paddles and kayaks create long streaks of bright lights on the water's surface.
In addition to all the magic happening around you, the night sky over the water will look exceptionally bright.
So when you're out on the water paddling through that brilliant blue-green shimmer, don't forget to look up.
This is a tour you'll want to book in advance, as the company only does one tour per evening on select evenings (only around new and small moon phases).
Bring a headlamp, and don't forget to arrange for overnight accommodations — the tour ends late, so you'll want to spend the night on San Juan Island.
