Haunted houses are fun and all, but many provide a rather passive experience. The opposite is true with Zombie Safari at Cousins' Paintball near Dallas, where visitors are completely immersed in the action. This interactive hayride lets you hunt the undead and save the city from a deadly takeover -- and it only happens in October.
Just 20 minutes from downtown Dallas lies one of the most unique and realistic Halloween attractions in Texas. Zombie Safari is like a video game come to life, allowing visitors to hunt the undead with paintball guns before it's too late.
Here's the story: A mysterious, brain-eating infection at a nearby correctional facility has spiraled out of control. Inmates, staff, and military personnel have all contracted the illness, and the walking dead have now invaded the grounds of Cousins' Paintball. Only with the help of skilled zombie hunters will the outbreak be contained and the city safe from destruction.
You'll pile into a "Zombie Response Vehicle," or ZRV, which has been equipped with special weapons -- .50-caliber paintball guns -- to neutralize the threat. This interactive hayride is unlike any haunted house you've experienced, with sound effects, props, and a spooky fog sure to keep your heart thumping in fearful exhilaration.
Once night falls, you'll begin to hear an ominous rustling in the trees. Zombies start to emerge from deep within the wooded landscape, groaning in exasperated hunger as they look for a snack. You'd better hope your aim holds up in the dark!
All ages are welcome on the safari, but children must be at least seven years old to sit in a shooter position. Anyone six and under must sit on a parent or guardian's lap, and all children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
General admission is $25.95 + a $2.47 fee, but please be advised that wait times can approach 2-3 hours. VIP tickets only cost about $15 extra and shorten the line substantially -- you'll also get 100 extra rounds!
The hunt is on every Friday and Saturday from October 2 through Halloween night. It all starts at 7 p.m. and goes until the very last zombie has been taken care of.
You'll find Zombie Safari at Cousins' Paintball in Forney. From Dallas, take exit 487 on I-20 and head south one mile until you come upon a turn-in on the right-hand side of the road. There's a sign -- you can't miss it!
