If You Live in Texas, This Bluebonnet Trail Is a Spring Bucket-List Must
The best spring wildflowers in Texas can be found on the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails. Explore 40 miles of breathtaking seasonal blooms.
I might be a tad biased in saying this, but I truly believe spring wildflowers in Texas are more beautiful than anywhere else. My favorite time of year is when the country roads are lined with bluebonnets, and I can take long, scenic drives to admire the striking cobalt blooms. A new tradition I started a few years ago is heading out to Ennis for the annual Ennis Bluebonnet Trails Festival, which is held in April each year. The bluebonnet fields almost don’t look real because they’re so vibrant and extend far into the distance. I can confidently say it’s my favorite spring festival in Texas, and I don’t plan on ever missing a year.
While the festival is only one weekend, the driving trails are open all April long, so you have the entire month to see the bluebonnets in all their splendor. The flowers typically peak around the third week of April, but it varies from year to year. You can check the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails website before your visit to ensure it’ll be worthwhile.
So, why Ennis? In 1997, it was designated as the home of the Official Texas Bluebonnet Trails and named the Official Bluebonnet City of Texas. The bluebonnets here are unlike anything you’ve ever seen, even compared to places like Willow City Loop and Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area (which are amazing, don’t get me wrong — but these are a million times better). Not only are the flowers bolder than almost anywhere else in the state, but there are simply more of them to marvel at. An impressive 40 miles of mapped trails weave their way in and around Ennis, and the roadsides are bursting with color.
The festival also has food vendors, a market, and other activities for the whole family, so save the date! This year’s fest is being held from April 17 to April 19, 2026. Mark your calendars because we think you'll love it! Plus, if you're looking for more things to do in the area that weekend, be sure to visit our itinerary planner for recommendations.
