There literally is no attraction in the world like the Congress Avenue bats - they're the largest urban colony on the planet. Nowhere else will you find more of these majestic creatures making their presence known all at once. If only these little bats knew how famous they are, drawing hundreds of onlookers every night of the summer. They've attracted a cult-like following in Austin, with professional photographers and awestruck children alike heading out to catch a glimpse of their spectacular show at dusk. If you have yet to experience it, what are you waiting for? Summer 2016 is drawing to a close, and it would be a crying shame to wait an entire year to watch one of the most mesmerizing, talked-about animal spectacles in the country.
Every summer night at dusk, 1.5 million Mexican Free-Tailed bats emerge from underneath the bridge.
It's the largest bat colony in the entire world, and seeing the Austin sky enveloped in a blanket of swarming darkness is a truly breathtaking sight.
You can stand on the bridge and watch their emergence from above...
...or relax on the lawn below and gaze up as they take over the horizon.
There's nothing to be afraid of, either - studies have shown that bats are actually extremely loving creatures.
(So if you were looking to turn into a vampire tonight after having your blood sucked, you'd better look elsewhere.)
There's an observatory across the street where you can get the best possible view of the spectacle.
It generates over $10 million of tourism revenue for the city yearly.
So, next time you're in Austin on a summer night, head over to the Congress Ave bridge to watch these incredible creatures put on an unforgettable show.
But make sure you get there early so you can get a spot right at the edge of the bridge. Otherwise, you'll have to watch through a few rows of people, and that's no fun.
Have you ever seen the Congress Avenue bats? Don't you agree that it's truly a spectacular sight?
