The Steepest Railway In The World Is Right Here In Tennessee

Chattanooga, Tennessee, is home to the world's steepest railway, the Incline Railway, offering stunning views and proximity to attractions like Ruby Falls and Rock City.

Chattanooga is the unsung hero of Tennessee, we feel. What with their gorgeous views, sweet, homespun communities and a coffee culture that rivals Nashville, we're simply shocked this pretty city isn't lauded 'til the cows come home. Especially since the steepest railway in the world just so happens to make its home smack dab in the middle. Curious? Take a look at this amazing feat!

With at 72.7% grade, the Incline Railway is officially the steepest railway in the entire world.

Incline Railway is approximately one mile long - which means you have a hot second to take a look at the gorgeous view behind you!

Which is right here, by the way.

The cable system that is used was designed and actually built by Otis Elevator Company in 1895.

Ruby Falls, Cavern Castle and Rock City are all within a ten minute drive. How kooky is that?! Your fun summer vacation just got that much easier.

Two cars can operate at once, because of a small section in the center of the track that allows two cars to pass one another in transit.

Will you be riding anytime soon?

Wow. We had no idea that Chattanooga was so epic...have you ridden the railway? You better get on it!
