All along the outskirts of the Great Smoky Mountains are these little shopping centers known as villages. Every one of them I have encountered offers unique finds and one-of-a-kind crafts. The Appalachian Mountains have inspired thousands of people to capture the beauty found in nature and transfer it to their preferred art style. One place where you'll find this inspired art in abundance is the Apple Valley Mountain Village in Townsend, Tennessee.
Just a short drive away from the Tuckaleechee Caverns, you will find this little village. Tucked into the mountainous countryside of Townsend, this village is the perfect place to while away the afternoon.
The General Store is a long-standing tradition among these mountains, so make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to peruse the goods sold. Meander through the rows and rows of unique items as the floorboards creek underfoot. It's such a fun, tactile experience!
Among some of the items you can expect to find are hand-crafted souvenirs, mountain-inspired goods, and Smoky Mountain gifts. Many iconic flavors from this region can be found in the locally made jams and jellies. And no trip to a Tennessee general store is ever complete until you get the fresh fudge!
The cafe in the village is the perfect place to order a coffee or one of their famous milkshakes. There is plenty of outdoor seating to sit back and relax in true Tennessee fashion.
You can find a wide variety of foods like juicy burgers, succulent BBQ, and hearty breakfast items.
A favorite among visitors is the cow-shaped condiment holder named Caroline. Guests can grab hold and squeeze out their preferred condiment. It might seem (ahem) utterly ridiculous, but don’t knock it 'til you try it!
Not only can you get unique souvenirs and delicious food, but you can also visit during one of the events scheduled throughout the year. This little village has been known to host artisan workshops, concerts, and car shows, so make sure you keep your eyes on their calendar.
The Smoky Mountain Outdoor Center has everything you need to supply an epic national park adventure, too. They also offer several unique tours within the Smokies like hiking, fishing, and horseback riding. Talk about the perfect Tennessee day!
