The city of Knoxville is perhaps best known for being the hometown of the University of Tennessee, but it actually boasts a deep history and heritage as one of the preeminent cities in the state. Of course, when you visit, it's necessary to plan out exactly where you're going to go, and we have one recommendation: Market Square. The historic location is great for history buffs and hungry tourists alike, and it's a wonderful place to visit for seasonal fun or perhaps just for an easy afternoon spent wandering the shops.
You'll find Market Square in Knoxville, Tennessee located right in the midst of downtown. It's best known for hosting a myriad of outdoor events throughout the year as well as a shopping outlet and dining destination.
Market Square is actually located right next to Krutch Park, known for its scenic beauty and as a great place for families to gather. Of course, if you're bringing kids to the square, there are two water play fountains that are perfect for littles.
The Market Square Farmers' Market is also a great place to be. It's operated by Nourish Knoxville, and though there are different markets throughout the city, this one in the Square is the largest.
If you do pitch up for the Market Square Farmers' Market, you can expect a wide variety of local produce, plants, flowers, and even bread and baked goods.
The shopping at the Square is a must! There are multiple small retail shops located throughout, including Knoxville Chocolate Co and the "scruffy little gift shop" known as Earth to Old City. There's a little something for everyone, especially if you're looking for a Knoxville souvenir.
The nightlife is also a doozy! Most restaurants have beer, wine, and cocktail offerings, and you can watch Market Square become a delight when the lights go down and the streetlights turn on. Preservation Pub has live music, and Bernadette's is known for its amethyst lounge and "magic beer tree."
Have you visited Market Square? Will you be going? If you do, make sure you check out seasonal opportunities and the Concerts on the Square experience that occurs in the early summer.
What a beautiful place to visit in the heart of one of the most underrated cities in Tennessee. You can stay up to date on what's going on in Knoxville right here.
