Tatanka: Story of the Bison in Deadwood, South Dakota, offers an educational experience about the history of bison and Native Americans.
Millions of bison once roamed the Great Plains, but they were almost driven to extinction. Tatanka: Story of the Bison is an amazing attraction that tells you about the history of one of South Dakota's most beloved creatures. You've got to check this place out!
Tatanka: Story of the Bison is located at 100 Tatanka Drive in Deadwood. It includes an interpretive center and outdoor exhibits. Plan on visiting for about an hour to see everything.
Inside the interpretive center, you'll find exhibits about the history of the bison and Native Americans that once lived on the plains here. Owner Kevin Costner also displays many of the costumes from Dances With Wolves.
Members of the Lakota tribe give presentations daily.
As many as 60 million bison once roamed the prairie here. White hunters slaughtered millions of bison for just a few select parts of the animals, leaving their carcasses to rot in the sun. By 1900 there were just 1,000 left.
Outside, you'll find a little trail with more historical displays. See how the Lakota used bison for food, shelter and clothing.
You'll find interpretive signs along the way that give you even more information.
One of the most impressive displays here is the bronze sculpture that features 14 bison and three Native American riders.
Take some time to enjoy the scenery, too. This is truly a beautiful place.
The Tantanka: Story of the Bison center is only open through October 14th, so visit soon!
The center is open Monday through Sunday from 9 AM to 4 PM. Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for children.
