Forgotten South Carolina: These 16 Abandoned Places Are Being Reclaimed By Nature
South Carolina is home to many abandoned structures that are slowly being reclaimed by nature.
South Carolina lays claim to many abandoned structures. People move on and leave behind all sorts of things and when no one else is there to claim it then the land is happy to have it back. Slowly, but surely it takes chunks here and bits there. Before you know it, you are taking pictures of mere skeletons of what once was, but don't blink because if you do they are gone completely.
1. Old Charleston City Jail, Charleston, SC. The only thing behind these bars now are memories and dust motes.
2. An abandoned rollercoaster ride somewhere in SC. What once held screaming riders, now holds debris and rust.
3. Old and abandoned, a barn barely stands now in Newberry, SC.
4. Once a thriving business, this old garage is slowly crumbling. Edgefield County, SC.
5. Abandoned shacks in the Beaufort, SC area.
6. There is something so forlorn about old railroads that are now defunct and giving away under the stress of time. This was once known as the Swamp Rabbit Railroad, Greenville, SC.
7. I used to pass this building every time I went into the town of Olar. My mother would tell me how it used to look in the town's heyday. Unfortunately, that heyday is no more and many buildings have succumbed to time. This is the old Bank of Olar in Olar, SC.
8. An abandoned Emart in Orangeburg, SC. Now it is a place for hitchhiking trees to grow in the cracks.
9. A rural SC home. Kudzu is not the only thing known for its voracious appetite, Wisteria can be quite hungry as well.
10. Almost gone. It definitely could be called a "treehouse" now. Rural SC.
11. Left on its own somewhere in time, this building is barely holding on. As a side note, the Spanish moss is beautifully eerie.
12. Scurry's Gin in Newberry, SC (constructed 1910). I've been inside old tin buildings like this and even a slight wind can howl inside.
13. Crumbling and broken, but still standing. Old Main Street, Chappell's, SC
14. When no one else will have it, the land will take it back. Such is the circle of life. Rural, SC.
15. It's arms are open in welcome. Who will come knocking? Forgotten barn, Rural SC.
16. What secrets are there inside? Only the trees will be told now. Rural, South Carolina.
Sadly, so many of these buildings exist in South Carolina, but not for long. Neither time nor nature discriminates and they both will take back what belongs to them little by little. The photographers are the keepers here as they go out and discover these places and hold their memories for all to see.
I want to thank all of the photographers who have shared their work for the world to see. You make the memories for us when time steals them away. A sincere thank you for your artistry. And to all of you, my friends, I bid you happy hunting for your own abandoned buildings. If you have a great photograph you would like to share, please put it in the comments below. Until next time...
