The Abandoned Spring Garden Elementary School In Philadelphia Is Striking
Spring Garden School Number One in North Philadelphia, designed by Irwin T. Catharine, is an abandoned historic building with plans for potential redevelopment.
The former Spring Garden Public School looms over 12th street, between Ogden and Parrish in North Philadelphia. Today, Spring Garden students attend the newer school, located on on Melon Street. Abandoned since 1986, the Spring Garden School Number One is a creepy testament to educations past.
Irwin T. Catharine, who was the chief architect of numerous Philadelphia schools, designed Spring Garden School and oversaw its construction from 1927-1928. It is three stories tall and has a limestone entrance.
The roof of Spring Garden is home to what was once an impressive paved basketball court.
In 1986, the school moved to its current location and the newly abandoned Spring Garden School was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
As you can see, the old classrooms have fallen prey to graffiti and other destruction, along with decay from time.
As of last March, a developer aimed to convert the building into a residential building, although there are no definite plans for its redevelopment at this point.
