The Oldest Theatre In America Is Right Here In Pennsylvania And You Need To Visit
Pennsylvania's history is an extensive one, yet many people may not realize that the oldest theatre in the nation is located in our very own backyard. Founded in 1809, the Walnut Street Theatre is every bit as fascinating as it is historic. For those who have yet to visit, a tour of this Pennsylvania landmark is a must.
Let's take a look:
The Walnut Street Theatre is the official state theatre of Pennsylvania. Its exact address is 825 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107.
Since 1809, this beloved historical landmark has produced countless shows, musicals, and entertaining events.
The above photo is circa 1885. You'll notice a horse-drawn carriage, a common mode of transportation to and from shows.
In addition to being the oldest theatre in the country, the Walnut Theatre also happens to have the highest subscription in the entire world.
Over 55,000 visitors from near and far hold season tickets.
The theatre is renowned for welcoming some of the most famous actors of the 19th and 20th century to its stage.
A list of the Walnut Street Theatre's famous actors includes Helen Hayes (photographed above), Edwin Booth, George C. Scott, Jack Lemmon, Katharine Hepburn, Ethel Waters and Jessica Tandy.
In 1976, the Walnut was the site of the first debate between President Gerald Ford and Governor Jimmy Carter.
Today, the professional theatre company puts on spectacular performances which are often compared to the standards of Broadway.
The Walnut is also known for keeping alive some historical traditions. After over two centuries, the theatre continues to use the grid, rope, pulley and sandbag system for its productions.
If you can't catch a show, tours of the theatre are also available and include some fascinating behind-the-scenes history.
