Just about everywhere we go in Pennsylvania, we come face-to-face with history, even if we may not realize it. A stroll through Central Market Lancaster in Pennsylvania, for example, is like traveling back through time. As one of the oldest in the United States, the market has become a popular neighborhood gathering spot and the perfect place for finding everything from fresh produce and homemade goodies to fresh flowers and handmade gifts.
Central Lancaster Market started modestly, with just 120 square feet in 1730, and has grown to span more than two acres in the heart of downtown Lancaster.
It's one of those neighborhood destinations you have to visit once. But, after that first time, you'll likely make it a weekly visit.
You'll find a little bit of everything - fresh fruits and vegetables, handpicked flowers, and homemade candy - at the historic market.
While some vendors come and go, the market lays claim to a few old timers - stands that have been at the market through multiple generations.
Make a point to stop at Stoner’s Homegrown Vegetables, for example, which has been a popular stand at the market for more than a century.
Then stock up on the freshest fruits and veggies at Thomas Produce, a market staple for more than 80 years.
Even if you're not looking for anything in particular, meander through the market. You're sure to find a ton of goodies.
If you plan to visit Lancaster Central Market, you'll find quite a few parking lots within walking distance of the historic market. Prince Street, Central, and Penn Square Garages are just a few.
The beloved neighborhood market welcomes shoppers from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. While the market is predominately wheelchair-accessible, make sure you enter the #1 or #2 doors as they don't feature steps.
