Most People Have Long Forgotten About This Vacant Ghost Town In Rural Oklahoma

Skedee, Oklahoma is a ghost town with historical landmarks and remnants from its oil boom era.

Located in Pawnee County, Skedee, Oklahoma is a ghost town in a rural part of the state that most people have long forgotten. It was once an oil boomtown where millions of dollars flowed through it, but it now sits abandoned with pieces of history still scattered around town.

Skedee is located six miles northeast of the county seat of Pawnee, and with a population of just 50 residents, it's safe to say it's one of the many ghost towns in Oklahoma.

The town sprang up after the 1893 Land Run and was originally called Lemert.

The name was too similar to a neighboring town, so it was changed to Skedee in 1902 when the town built a post office.

One of the most remarkable landmarks that still stands in the center of town is The Bond of Friendship monument.

The structure was built in 1926 as a depiction of the friendship and business dealings between "Colonel" Walters and the Chief of the Osage Nation, Baconrind.

Millions of dollars flowed through the town during the oil boom, and at one point in history, the Osage were considered the wealthiest people in the world per capita.

The oil boom went bust in 1935 and it hit Skedee hard.

Then, in 1957, a flood washed out the railroad that went through town. Both of these events caused Skedee to dwindle, eventually turning it into a ghost town.

Today, many items and keepsakes are still left behind in decaying structures and buildings, a haunting reminder that this is just one of the many abandoned places in Oklahoma.

Inside the school, you'll still find books, games, desks, maps, and more.

Memories of a much happier time in Skedee, Oklahoma now collect dust as Mother Nature slowly reclaims her territory.
