There's nothing like a twinkling light display to put you in the proper holiday spirit. Each year, my husband lines our home's gutters and eaves with hundreds of colorful bulbs, and our retro Santa boldly welcomes guests to our doorstep. Piling into the family minivan to drive around and admire light displays near us is one of my favorite holiday traditions, and when we want to truly immerse ourselves in Christmas cheer, we pack up the car, bundle up, and head to one of the best Christmas lights in Ohio:

1. The Legendary Lights of Clifton Mill
The Legendary Lights of Clifton Mill is an annual tradition for many a Buckeye State family, with this charming and historic mill illuminated by 4 million twinkling lights come Christmastime (the 100-foot "waterfall" of twinkling lights is incomparable.)
2. Kings Island WinterFest
WinterFest is an unforgettable holiday experience where Kings Island transforms into 11 enchanting winter wonderlands. Lauded as one of the top "Theme Park Holiday Events" in the country, the annual event features ice skating on the Royal Fountain, the Eiffel Tower turned into a magical Christmas tree, the WinterFest Wonderland Parade, more than five million lights, and live entertainment throughout the park. 3. Light Up Middletown
Located in between Cincinnati and Dayton (hence its name), Middletown is home to one of Ohio's most beloved Christmas light displays. Light Up Middletown features some of the best Christmas lights near Cincinnati and is so worth a visit for plenty of colorful lights and holiday spirit. Admission is by donation only (all proceeds going to local charities), making Light Up Middletown the kind of event that captures the generous and giving spirit of the season. 4. Lake of Lights
If you're looking for a unique drive-thru display in Ohio, consider Lake of Lights in Kenton. This waterside light show is a local favorite that transforms Salisbury Park into a veritable winter wonderland each year. Even better? As a drive-thru event, it's accessible and extremely family-friendly, too. Lake of Lights is open nightly from Thanksgiving until New Year's Eve. 5. Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Wildlights
Ohio is home to some nationally acclaimed zoos, and each puts on a dazzling holiday show. You can't go wrong with any of them (we see you, Cincinnati Zoo Festival of Lights and Cleveland Zoo Wild Winter Lights), the Columbus Zoo's annual Wildlights earns points for its central location. No matter what corner or region of the Buckeye State you hail from, a "wild" night of dazzling zoo lights is an easy drive away.
6. Columbus Commons Holiday Lights
Our capital city experiences a magical transformation each year. Enjoy the festive lights at Columbus Commons nightly from 5-10 p.m., Nov. 22, 2024, through February 16, 2025. More than 400,000 LED lights dance and dazzle in the park, and Fridays are extra festive, with free hot cocoa and carousel rides. If you only attend one winter festival in Ohio this year, make it this one.
7. Christmas at Kingwood
If you're pining for an old-fashioned Christmas in the English countryside, Christmas at Kingwood is the next best thing. Year-round, visitors marvel at the beauty of Kingwood Center Gardens. During the holiday season, the historic mansion and surrounding grounds are extra magical. During Christmas at Kingwood, the 47-acre estate is transformed into an enchanting winter wonderland that will instantly put you in the holiday spirit.
8. Christmas at the Castle
We've heard about Christmas towns... but in Ohio, we have an entire Christmas kingdom! This is the magic that awaits at Christmas at the Castle. Immerse yourself in the holiday spirit as you stroll through the grounds adorned with over 150,000 lights, outdoor Christmas trees, and your favorite festive tunes. Bundle up -- Christmas light display is an outdoor walking event, but I guarantee that you'll be so transfixed by all the twinkling lights, you'll forget about the cold!
9. Cleveland Public Square at Christmas
One of the best Christmas lights displays in Cleveland (and all of Ohio, for that matter), there's nothing like Public Square at Christmas. With a massive tree, ice skating rink, and thousands of lights to enjoy, we daresay Cleveland's Public Square blows NYC's Central Park out of the water!
