My First-Time Snowboarding Ever Was In Maggie Valley, North Carolina: And I Didn’t Break A Bone

A beginner's guide to snowboarding in Maggie Valley, North Carolina.

As someone who thought the only slopes I'd ever encounter were geometry in high school, snowboarding for someone who grew up in Florida seemed quite far-fetched. But when my partner suggested a winter weekend escape to Maggie Valley, North Carolina, for a birthday trip, I decided to take the plunge—or more accurately, the tumble—into the world of snowboarding. Spoiler alert: I survived, intact and smiling.

There aren't too many skiing and snowboarding opportunities in the South, so we had to venture a bit north to reach areas where snow could stick around. Enter Maggie Valley in North Carolina. With charm, incredible views, and even a truly scenic route to the top, this ski slope was everything I could have hoped for for the first time. Our destination was Cataloochee Ski Area, a beloved spot for snow enthusiasts of all levels. It's conveniently located and equipped with everything a first-timer could need, including rentals, beginner-friendly slopes, and an abundance of patient instructors.

Upon arrival, the first stop was the rental shop. I’ll admit I was apprehensive about navigating the chaos of picking up gear, but the staff made it surprisingly seamless. For about $30 to $50, I got a full setup: snowboard, boots, and a helmet (safety first, people). Pro tip: Reserve your gear online ahead of time to avoid any stress. The shop’s organized system kept the lines moving quickly, and the staff happily answered my rookie questions, like, “Which way is the front of the board again?”

We already had our lift tickets purchased online, which cost around $70 for a full-day pass. Cataloochee also offers half-day and night skiing options, so there’s flexibility depending on how ambitious you feel. Hours typically run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., giving plenty of time to conquer (or be conquered by) the slopes.

In hindsight, I should've started with the bunny slope - the short and not too steep area to get your bearings. But, alas, a rookie move took me straight to the chair lift up to the top of the mountain. Boarding the lift was an adventure in itself, requiring coordination I wasn’t entirely sure I possessed. But with a few helpful nudges (and a little laughter from my partner), I made it to the top of an easy green run. From there, it was a mix of exhilarating glides and the occasional tumble, but every wipeout was a lesson learned.

All in all, this was an experience I'll never forget. Maggie Valley's family-friendly atmosphere made it much less intimidating for a beginner. Plus, with a cabin-style lounge area at the base of the hill, I had a hot alcoholic beverage and watched skiers and snowboarders navigate the hill with more grace than I ever did.

Would I do it again? Absolutely. Will I still fall on my next trip? Without a doubt. But that’s part of the charm. Snowboarding, I’ve discovered, isn’t just about gliding down a mountain; it’s about embracing the slips, slides, and triumphs along the way.
