The Stomach-Dropping Suspended Bridge Walk You Can Only Find In North Carolina
Atop the picturesque Grandfather Mountain sits one of the Tar Heel State's most popular landmarks — a 228-ft. suspension bridge that connects two peaks and sways a mile above sea level. Each year thousands of tourists cross the bridge, known as the Mile High Swinging Bridge.
Not only is the Mile High Bridge an incredible sight to see, it's also been dubbed America's largest suspension footbridge.
Built in 1952 (and rebuilt in 1999), the bridge towers 5,305 ft. above sea level.
If you're afraid of heights then crossing it will definitely test your limits.
And you may not want to look down.
Though the bridge is completely safe, it is designed to sway, which can test the nerves of even the bravest crossers.
Especially on extremely windy days.
Foggy days can be a bit scary. Just imagine not being able to see where your next step leads.
Once you've gotten across safely the 360-degree views are completely worth the trip over.
The bridge is open daily and it's right off the Blue Ridge Parkway at 2050 Blowing Rock Hwy., Linville, NC.
