What was once a juvenile training center eventually became the stuff of nightmares. Nowadays, it sits vacant with glaring darkness. However, this abandoned North Carolina school remains a historical and simultaneously sordid place dating back to the early 1900s. What’s been dubbed the “monument of mistreatment,” the Stonewall Jackson Training School sits dilapidated and decaying off of Old Charlotte Rd in Concord Although this abandoned North Carolina school looks a bit creepy, it's rich in history too.

The school itself is permanently closed, with multiple dilapidated buildings all over the campus. Nature has reclaimed much of the space, with overgrown ivy, shrubs, and weeds everywhere.

The 19th century didn’t have too many laws (if any) about processing juveniles for petty crimes. Young adults who committed crimes but were too young to be sent to prison were in dire conditions. As you can imagine, mistreatment ran rampant for these youths.

Kids as young as 13 were often given years of hard labor as sentences for something as minor as petty theft. It wasn’t until residents petitioned for the young juveniles to be sent to be re-educated rather than punished that this building was built.

In 1909, the Stonewall Jackson Training School was born, eventually operating with strictness and tolerability. Buildings were erected around the campus, including an administration building, a memorial hall, and many more.

Yet, at the end of WWII, the school became a dark and sinister place, where the treatment of the young kids grew to be inhumane. In the 1970s, the population of students dwindled due to prison reform and welfare programs. This led to this school becoming one of the many abandoned places in NC.

Today, the buildings have been condemned and are unsafe to go into. However, these buildings are also considered historical sites, which means they cannot be torn down. So they sit empty and abandoned, with a creepy atmosphere of many years of mistreatment.
