This Abandoned Theme Park In North Carolina Announces Reopening Date With Dramatic Makeover

Ghost Town in the sky opened May 1st, 1961 to thousands of guests seeking their very own Wild Wild West Experience. The theme park featured 40 replica buildings and amusement rides. Guests rode the ski lift to a 4,600-foot elevation for an experience like none other. During its prime, Ghost Town had, on average, 620,000 visitors per year.

Despite its popularity and the unique atmosphere, Ghost Town struggled to stay alive. Eventually being closed and essentially abandoned.

Over the past 10 years, Ghost Town has struggled to stay afloat. In 2013, businesswoman Alaska Presley purchased the theme park for $1.5 million with plans to reopen the beloved attraction in the summer of 2016.

Many speculated and wondered if the park would ever come to fruition. Between faulty mechanics on rides and general lack of maintenance, it seemed a daunting task.

But all the hard work and planning paid off, as Ghost Town Village now has an OFFICIAL opening date of June 1st, 2016.

Staying true to the original plan, Ghost Town plans to not compete with more popular parks like Dollywood, but showcase their own unique attraction. While sticking (somewhat) close to the Wild Wild West theme, Ghost Town now aims to be an Appalachian village.

While Ghost Town In The Sky is now a thing of the past, Ghost Town village has plenty to offer. Aside from a lively main street, there will also be three zip line obstacle courses and gorgeous overlooks that are just perfect for pictures.
