It’s Impossible Not To Love The Most Eccentric Village In New Jersey

New Jersey has a wide range of charming towns, overflowing with personality; Haddonfield, Hoboken, Princeton, Cape May and Lambertville are a few favorites. While each has something special to offer, I wouldn't necessarily describe them as eccentric. When I think eccentric, I think of something a bit more...unconventional. There's one unique little village that really stands out to me; read on to learn more about it.

Smithville is an unincorporated community located within Galloway Township.

The village is just a short drive from Atlantic City, but a visit will transport you to another world.

Home to around 7,000 residents, the community has existed since the Revolutionary War.

The area was very rural until the 1960s, when a collection of shops opened. Development was expanded in the 1980s with the addition of the Village Greene.

Part of a planned community, you'll find quaint shops, restaurants, a carousel, mini-golf, winery and more here.

The old-timey feel is authentic; many of the buildings are historic structures, relocated to the village.

The collection of shops is unique. You'll find everything from candles to crafts, organic body products to Native American gifts. In fact, many cultures are represented; Out of Ireland will take you straight to the Emerald Isle.

Dining options include the Lantern Light Tavern (American cuisine), Costello's (Italian/pizza), A.J.'s (a mixed menu), a cafe and bakery.

You can also dine at the Colonial Inn, one of several quaint lodging options. For a more rustic feel, spend a night in "The Barn."

On a nice summer day, spend some time paddle boating on the lake.

Another fun feature is the events, including frequent car shows. In fact, there's one tonight. Shows are held every other Friday and are free.

Other events include one of the largest Fourth of July parades in New Jersey and a living history encampment on August 12th. Have you visited yet? What are you waiting for? It's a great day trip if you live in the area, or are visiting a nearby beach town. You'll find the village along Moss Mill Road, just off Route 9.
