A Rail Trail Runs Through This Missouri Town And It’s The Ultimate Outdoor Playground

With hundreds of hiking trails across Missouri, we have plenty of opportunities to get out and explore. Some of the most unique trails are those that follow former railroad lines, like the Ruby Jack Trail in Carthage, Missouri, which gives us an up-close view of stunning natural beauty and several towns along the way. Whether you follow the entire trail or just a portion, you’ll definitely want to save some time to check out the towns along the way.

The Ruby Jack Trail meanders 16 miles from Carthage to the Missouri/Kansas State Line, passing through Oronogo and Carl Junction.

Popular with both hikers and bikers, the rail trail is predominately flat and features crushed limestone, making it both kid and stroller-friendly.

Brimming with natural beauty, Ruby Jack Trail passes a variety of scenery, including fields of wildflowers, rolling farmland, and wetlands. Bridges will take you over streams on the trail that’s abundant with wildlife.

Even though the rail trail provides ample shade from the surrounding trees, be sure to bring along plenty of water and sunscreen.

When you arrive in Carthage, spend some time exploring the many outdoor attractions in town, including the Battle of Carthage State Historic Site. Follow the short but sweet .02-mile Carter Spring Trail that offers a glimpse of where this Civil War battle was fought.

The Missouri town is also home to several other parks, including Carthage Municipal Park. The sprawling park features Kiddieland, a playground, a golf course, a pool, and a skating rink.
