Learn All About Comets At The Sky On Fire Event At Washington State Park

Summer’s all about packing in as much outdoor fun as we can before the cold temperatures inevitably roll in. A day at a Missouri state park, for example, offers so much promise as we hike, boat, and explore some of the area’s natural beauty. For a day of adventure, join other Missourians for Sky on Fire, a family-friendly event at Washington State Park in DeSoto, Missouri this August.

Delve into the fascinating world of comets at the Sky on Fire event at Washington State Park in DeSoto, set for Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023, from 2-8 p.m.

The family-friendly event kicks off with a petroglyph tour at 2 p.m. Join other visitors as you learn about these stone carvings that tell the rich history of the state park.

Wear a pair of comfy shoes for the short but sweet stroll that will provide a glimpse at the Mississippian-era carvings. Both your guide and interpretative panels along the path will provide insight into the stone carvings.

Then head over to the pool for the Comet Craft at 4 p.m. The kiddos will have a blast building a comet craft as everyone learns about meteor showers and the best time to catch one.

The evening caps off with an epic Celestial Dance at 7 p.m. An interactive display will teach you all about the solar system, including comets. After experiencing what it might feel like to orbit the sun, make an ice cream comet.

All of that fun means just one thing. You’ll be all set to catch the 2023 edition of the Perseid Meteor Shower, which you can catch through Sept. 1. However, the peak of the Perseids is overnight Aug. 12-13.
