The World’s Largest Collection Of Ship Models Is Right Here In Mississippi At The Old Depot Museum

Of all the amazing exhibits that fill the Old Depot Museum, the massive model ship collection is probably the most impressive. Dubbed the world’s largest, the collection was used by the History Channel to film a majority of its show, Great Ships. The producers were so impressed with the variety of models that they actually referred to it as a "gold mine." The collection of model ships isn’t the only rarity you’ll find at the museum, though. Take a look:

The Old Depot Museum is located in the former Yazoo and Mississippi River Valley Railroad Depot in Vicksburg.

A great visit for all ages, the museum houses a variety of exhibits on military and maritime history…

… including the world’s largest and only collection of model Civil War ships.

The massive collection is actually the reason the museum was opened. It all began back in the 90s when museum founder, Lamar Roberts, needed a place to house his model gunboats.

Throughout the years, the fleet has grown greatly.

In addition to 100 models of Civil War gunboats, the museum also houses the 2nd largest collection of model riverboats in the South as well as the only collection of model ships with Mississippi names.

And the collection will only get bigger, as new models are constantly being added.

There’s more to the museum than ships, though.

A 250-square-foot diorama of the battle of Vicksburg – the only one of its kind – is also part of the museum’s exhibits.

Featuring lots of intricate details, the diorama brings the historic battle to life.

The museum also includes several model train displays, a replica of the Windsor Mansion, video footage of trails used by soldiers and citizens during the Siege of Vicksburg, and more.
