Being a couch potato doesn’t have to be a bad thing. The key is you’ve got to watch something worthwhile, and we’ve got just the thing – a virtual tour of the Mississippi State Capitol. During the online adventure, you’ll learn all about the building’s architecture, history, and purpose.

The virtual tour of the capitol building, which has been officially dubbed Experience the Mississippi State Capitol: A National Historic Landmark, is about 30 minutes long and jam-packed with interesting info.

It’s a must-see for everyone – those who plan on visiting in person as well as those who are unable to do so.

The stately structure was designated a Mississippi Landmark in 1986.

Years later, in 2016, it became a National Historic Landmark, which is a pretty big honor since not all state capitols are given National Historic Landmark status.

Though it didn’t become a landmark until 1986, the building’s history goes back much further – all the way back to 1901, which is when construction began.

Interestingly, the building’s design was chosen through a contest. After choosing a design, it took 28 months and more than $1 million to build the 171,000-square-foot building.

The building isn’t just historically significant, though. It’s an architectural masterpiece too.

The National Park Service called it "an exceptional example of the Beaux Arts style."

The Mississippi State Capitol has welcomed visitors for years.

In addition to offering self-guided and guided tours, the capitol has public galleries, where visitors can view legislative sessions in action.

Most recently, the capitol expanded its offering to include virtual tours.

The next best thing to an in-person visit, the virtual tour highlights the building’s history as well as its fascinating features. So, are you ready to embark on a virtual tour of the Mississippi State Capitol? We thought so! Kick off the tour here.

Prefer to plan an in-person visit to the Mississippi State Capitol? For tour info, check out the Mississippi Legislature website.
