Come summer in Minnesota, it's time to get outdoors. After weathering through a long, cold winter, Minnesotans want to soak up the sun as much as we can. By day, hiking, biking, and swimming are among the top activities. But at night, things get a little more exciting. Besides camping and bonfires, one favorite activity is going to the drive-in. Minnesotans are lucky to still have six drive-in theaters open all over our state. In just about every region, one of these nostalgic attractions draws visitors each night for some outdoor summer fun. Below, you'll find a list of theaters that are currently open where you can take part in this summertime tradition:
1. Starlite Drive-In — Litchfield
In Litchfield, Minnesota, Starlite Drive-In has been around since the 1950s. It still stands as a nostalgic attraction that draws many visitors every night. Check out their website and Facebook page for information about pricing and showtimes.
2. Verne Drive-In — Luverne
Luverne is a tiny town in the southwestern corner of Minnesota. But on warm summer nights, it draws visitors thanks to its retro drive-in. The movies start at dusk, but you'll want to show up earlier to secure your spot at this single-screen drive-in theater. For more information, check their website and Facebook page.
3. Elko Drive-In Theater — Elko New Market
Elko Drive-in Theater is Minnesota's newest drive-in! Built in 2000, it's been around for just 20 years now. But it still has the same nostalgic charm as theaters from decades past. And because it's just outside of the Twin Cities, it's one of the most popular drive-ins in the state. For more information, check their website and Facebook page.
4. Long Drive-In — Long Prairie
Established in 1956, Long Drive-In is a wonderful spot for a trip back to yesteryear — while seeing the latest movies, of course. Every night is a double feature at this central Minnesota drive-in, and there's always something playing that you're bound to enjoy. For more information, check their website and Facebook page.
5. SkyVu Drive-In — Warren
Way up in the small northwestern Minnesota town of Warren, SkyVu Drive-In has been around for more than 50 years. If you live in the area, make a point to visit this summer! For more information, look at their website and Facebook page.
Minnesota's sixth drive in, Vali-Hi Drive-In, has not yet announced opening dates for 2020 in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Check their website to find out when they open. Have you ever been to any of Minnesota's drive-in theaters? Let us know your favorite one in the comments!
