Davoll’s General Store is the oldest general store in Massachusetts, and one of the oldest in the country. It’s been catering to the Dartmouth community since 1793. That’s over 200 years of history packed into one unassuming yet charming wood-frame house in Russell’s Mills Village.
Read on to learn more about this quaint and classic shop, and why it merits a visit. Please note that the shop has recently switched owners, and the interior is undergoing a bit of updating. Rumor has it that those updates include the addition of plenty of penny candy.
Walking through the doors of Davoll’s is like stepping into the past.
The store feels like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting – chattering locals, happy children and plenty of old-fashioned baked treats.
William Howland bought the building in 1792, and began operating a much-needed general goods shop.
Since then, Davoll’s has expanded to offer all manner of items, from charming antiques to hot coffee and pastries.
The store is floored with wide planks, and its nooks and crannies are filled with books, clothing, dolls, quilts, Christmas decor, candy and collectibles.
The local area is filled with old, colonial homes, lush farmland and ocean breezes.
It hasn’t changed much since the 1950s. Nearby, the Alderbook Farm farm stand is open year-round.
Davoll’s has recently come under new ownership, and is currently undergoing renovations to bring the aging building back to its former luster. Renovations will likely be fully completed early this coming year. Until then, the store is open, and welcomes curious newcomers and oldtimers alike.
