This Roadside Attraction In Maine Is The Most Unique Thing You’ve Ever Seen

Perry's Nut House in Maine is a quirky roadside attraction known for its oddities and delicious fudge.

Maine has no shortage of fun and quirky little stops along the road. Some of more well-known roadside attractions are the ones that tower over the street, such as Big Jim the Fisherman in Prospect Harbor and Earth, the giant globe near Freeport. But, there are some pretty great places to stop during a road trip in Maine that might surprise you. This store is one of them!

Perry's Nut House began back in 1927 when I.L. Perry opened the shop to sell the bumper crop of Pecans growing in the South.

Over the years, he added curios and oddities and the shop, making it a nationally known stop.

The store included things such as an alligator hide, trick mirrors, boxing bear cubs, and a water buffalo shot by Teddy Roosevelt!

If you grew up in Maine, might remember stopping for a photo like this one with the Maine bear!

In 1997, many of the pieces were auctioned off and the property changed hands.

Perry's Nut House was reopened under new ownership and slowly but surely the old charm returned!

You'll still find odd things, such as...this.

And this.

And even this "mummy" which is suspected to have come from a family that purchased the mummy for parties.

And, some of the old original pieces have returned to the shop as well!

But, beyond the rich history and the curious - this place is a MUST stop if you love fudge made with pure butter and cream!

Some past summer flavors have included orange cream, wild Maine blueberry cheesecake and pirate’s fudge!

And, you'll love the opportunity to pick up a few things for friends and family.

Perry's Nut House is located at 45 Searsport Avenue in Belfast on the south side of Route 1 about a mile west of the Belfast bridge. They're open during the summer every day from 10am to 6pm, as well as shorter hours during the spring and fall. You can call them on (207) 338-1630. For more information, check out their website!
